Green Wings Puts a Spring in Veteran Horseman’s Step

25-01-2012

VETERAN horseman Jim Buchanan, the founder for clients of the Palmaday stud, now Secret Hills Farm, near Beaudesert in Queensland, has a variety of reasons to have a new spring in his step following the bold start to its racing career in New Zealand of the Dr Green 2-year-old Green Wings.

Now a second and a winner twice, including the Countdown Karaka Million at Ellerslie on January 14, at his only appearances, Green Wings is not only by a sire, Dr Green, that Jim chose for Palmaday, but he backed his judgement with his own mares, one of which is the dam of Green Wings.   Bred by Singleton’s Strawberry Hill stud, the dam is My Fairy Wings, an unraced daughter of Danehill, and she has been to Dr Green in each of the last five seasons, resulting in four foals and a 20/11/2011 service. He stood the latter year on $4,400 as one of the Secret Hills Farm sires.

Like Zizou, a resident at Turangga stud, Scone, Dr Green was a top ranking 2-year-old by Fusaichi Pegasus, the Mr. Prospector Kentucky Derby winner who paid seven visits to Coolmore in the Hunter Valley in 2001-07 and left over 600 foals. On top of this, Dr Green is a half-brother to Onemorenomore (Vinery stud) and from Palia, a sister to the dam of Casino Prince (Patinack Farm).  Trained in New Zealand, Dr Green at two won the Wellesley Stakes, finished second in the Counties Challenge, third in the STC Silver Slipper and fourth in the STC Todman Slipper Trial. These efforts were followed in New Zealand at three with a win in the Wanganui Guineas, second in the Hawkes Bay Guineas and a fourth in the Wellington Guineas. After a third in two Cup races in Hong Kong, Dr. Green was inspected by Jim Buchanan and purchased for Palmaday.

Jim Buchanan is still very active in breeding in Queensland with his headquarters on Coolbadah, a farm on the outskirts of Beaudesert which produced many good winners for the late Mr and Mrs Ian Hedley. In partnership with a long time friend and colleague from Hong Kong, Jim hosts about fifty horses, comprised by mares, yearlings and others of racing age, for Hong Kong clients.

In addition he has developed a business under the name of Global Medi-Vet, supplying veterinary products. They have Australian distribution rights for Ireland located Foran Enquine Products, a company noted for supplying superior quality products designed to keep horses fit, healthy and to allow them to compete to the best of their ability.
