Melbourne Column by George Lucas

Fontein Ruby continues to answer every question asked of her this preparation. She’ll represent the Smerdon camp in the Wakeful Stakes, run over 2000m at Group 2 level. Doesn’t appear to be a vintage field on paper, she’s the in form filly who is improving with every run and should be hard to hold out of the finish once again. Tuesday morning she worked on the course proper at Sandown over 1400m, stopping the clock at 1.40.1 and 24.30 last 400m. Oaks bound at this stage.
The in form Mick Price stable kick off the four day Flemington carnival with Manhattan Avenue in the Carbine Club Stakes, 1600m. He’s been thereabouts of late and hitting the line well. Thriving in work and will appreciate stepping back up in distance. Worked solidly on Tuesday morning over 1200m, recording 1.20.45 and 24.81 last 400m. One for the multiples

Azkadellia was a good thing beaten last start. The extra distance should pose no problems here. Worked over 1200m at Sandown on Tuesday morning, reported to have come on nicely since last run. Looks the one to beat.
Top class Sydney 3yo Rubick returned to the winners stall first up and has trained on a treat since. The Gerald Ryan stable have targeted the Coolmore Stud Stakes from the outset of this prep, he’ll be spot on for this assignment on the day. Wasn’t out to break any records on Tuesday morning, he worked over 800m in 54.62, home last 400m in 24.06. Currently $7 fixed odds markets, appeals on an each way basis. Time For War also worked over 800m, clocking 52.42 and 24.07 last 400m. Roughie for a place.
Marksmanship will back up in the Lexus Stakes, run over 2500m. He’s been thereabouts all prep, loves Flemington and looks a live each way hope once again. He was restricted to light work on the treadmill this week, he’s rock hard fit here, a wet track would enhance his chances significantly.
The Peter Moody stable will be represented by Brambles in the Mackinnon Stakes, run over 2000m at Group One level. Outstanding run in the Caulfield Cup, where he finished 4th behind star Japanese galloper Admire Rakti, beaten 1.1L to the line. Flying this time in, holding his condition well and thriving in work. Tuesday morning he worked over 1600m in 1.51.95 and 38.72 last 600m. Currently $13 fixed odds markets, representing excellent each way value for punters.
Moonovermanhattan will fly the flag for the Mick Price stable in the AAMI Victoria Derby, 2500m. Love the way he hit the line last start over 2040m at Moonee Valley. Looks like he’ll stay all day, trained to the minute for this and has a real sense of timing about him. Wasn’t asked to do a lot this week on the training track, rest assured he’ll be at his peak on the day.

Light Up Manhattan represents the Ciaron Maher camp. He worked at Sandown during the week over 1600m, stable very happy with him and reported to have improved since last run. One for the multiples.
Politeness didn’t have the best of luck last start in the Tristarc Stakes. She deserves a crack at Group One level, look out for her in the Myer Classic, run over 1600m. Robert Smerdon was happy with her work during the week. She ventured to Sandown on Tuesday morning and worked over 1000m, stopping the clock at 1.05 and 23.5, rail out 20m, excellent work. Always threatened to win a big one, if things go her way on the day, she has the class to figure prominently here.
