LONHRO Four-year-old Zellaro’s Breakthrough Win

The former New South Wales gelding ended a frustrating run of three seconds since being transferred to Kendrick Racing on the Sunshine Coast in a rich metropolitan maiden.

Stepping up to the mile for the first time, the Darby Racing-syndicated galloper was ultra-impressive in winning the Coke Zero Maiden Plate (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday, January 25.

Ridden by Damian Browne ($3.30-fav), he raced handy before bursting to the lead along the fence at the top of the straight and cruising away to win easily by three-and-a-quarter lengths.

“Brownie rode him perfectly, putting him into the race early,’’ trainer Stuart Kendrick said.

Zellaro had finished runner-up at Doomben, the Sunshine Coast and Eagle Farm at his past three runs since resuming from a spell for his new stable.

He resumed over 1200m and stepped up to 1400m and then 1500m before the breakthrough victory.

“He’s been looking for more ground,’’ said Kendrick.

“I think he might develop into a very nice stayer next prep.”

Some of the Darby Racing owners were trackside for the win.
