Queensland Stud’s Freakish Input Into Juvenile Race

09-02-2012

APPEARANCE of the Trevor Rowe (Cairns) trained sixth placed Falvelon gelding Blufalo in the juvenile event at Townsville on Tuesday of this week stopped a freakish occurrence in world racing. Without Blufalo, every one of the eight runners left in the field were bred on the one stud, had associated owners and prepared by the one trainer, Gympie based Peter Fleming.

In addition the race was conducted under the sponsorship of the stud farm responsible for the eight, Stan and Marilyn Johnston’s Craiglea at Kenilworth in the mountain foothills near Noosa and about ninety minutes drive north of Brisbane. Seven of the Craiglee runners are by sires used at the stud and four from mares by their sires.

One of the sires, Frisco View, now at on a fee of $2200 (2011) at Toomorrows Farm, Nana Glen, Coffs Harbour, provided five of the runners, including the first four home, while current Craiglee resident sires Waterford Road (by Danehill) and Rapid Man (St Covet) had one each. These two sires were also on low fees in 2011, available at $1100.  The other runner from Craiglee in the Townsville field is by Clang, the son of the Mr. Prospector sire Bellotto standing at Willowbend, Beaudesert. His Golden Slipper winning daughter Calaway Gal was bred on Craiglee for clients.

Besides supplying one of the runners in the race, the Swettenham stud bred Waterford Road, a brother to leading Western Australian sire Blackfriars, sired the dams of three of the Frisco View contestants, Craiglea Tequila (the winner), Craiglea Mandy (third) and Crystal Mates (fourth).  In winning this week, Craiglea Tequila, became one of the first 2-year-olds to have three wins on the board for the year, one in which he is one of the leading juvenile sires numerically. His eight starters have included four winners and a placegetters.

Last year, 2010-11, saw Frisco View have a spectacular juvenile strike rate, being responsible for four winners from five starters. The four winners were bred and raced by the Johnstons of Craiglea and trained by Peter Fleming.  All these Frisco View winners are among 127 winners that he has supplied from restricted opportunity since his owner Don Nancarrow imported him from America in1999 for Clearvale, the stud he then owned in the Bylong Valley and which is now Bylong Thoroughbreds. Don now lives near Coffs Harbour.

A son of the good Blushing Groom sire Mt Livermore, Frisco View is a showy chestnut with white front legs who won nine of 19 starts on leading American tracks, including the Group 3 Breeders’ Cup Sprint Championship at Gulfstream Park, Florida. He won a race at two by eight lengths.
